The National Jockeys Trust says thanks!
To everyone involved in the TAB NJT20 Cricket Match - thank you so much for your support, contribution and assistance that made our seventh annual event such a resounding success.
We are incredibly grateful for the ongoing support from each and every individual and organisation involved. The engagement from sponsors, players, volunteers, suppliers, donors, racing fans and media was amazing and, of course, vital in ensuring the success of the event that supports the National Jockeys Trust in its work assisting injured jockeys and the families of riders we have lost.
This year we are delighted to announce that we smashed previous fundraising records for this event. Our Everyday Heroes raised $78,357.55 ($25k higher than 2018) with overall funds raised reaching a massive $153,000. What an incredible effort by all involved!
Special acknowledgements to our Everyday Heroes in Danny O’Brien ($13,541), Brett Prebble ($9,912), Dr Gary Zimmerman ($4,553), William Pike ($4,184), Corey Brown ($3,612), Rupert Legh ($3,508), Damien Oliver ($3,321), Jamie Kah ($2,753), Brenton Avdulla ($2,201), Josh Ledger ($2,106), Brendan Fevola ($2,022), Mitch Goring ($1,989), Tegan Harrison ($1,773), Jake Norton ($1,728), Matt Cumani ($1,656) and Jason Maskiell ($1,600) who all hit their fundraising targets for “six”. Please check out the page to see the incredible efforts by the players, and the donors who contributed:
TO THE CRICKET
Injured jockey Ricky Thurgood and his parents Noel and Doris and other members of the Thurgood family were the National Jockeys Trust’s special guests at this year’s coin toss.
The Touchstone Farm Jockeys won the toss and elected to bowl. The Heritage Finance Racing All Stars scored 10/117 in their innings. Highlights included Nick Quinn who retired on 20, Nic Ashman 18, Brendan Fevola 15 from 8 balls faced, and Gil McLachlan and Captain Bryce McGain not out on 8 and 4 respectively.
In reply, The Touchstone Farm Jockeys put in a brave performance with Josh Ledger and Mitch Goring adding 7 runs in their PowerPlay over. Both Damien Oliver and Brenton Avdulla retired on 20, but with four “ducks” on the score card the Jockeys fell short with a total score of 12/103.
Clearly, much more practice is required from the Jockeys leading in to next year’s match!
David Taggart Perpetual Trophy
The Heritage Finance All Stars won the 2019 TAB NJT20 Cricket Match and were presented with the “David Taggart Perpetual Trophy”.
The Subzero Man of the Match:
The Subzero “Man of the Match” was taken out by superstar Brendan Fevola.
NJT20 Cricket Hall of Fame:
Brad Rawiller was inducted into the NJT20 Cricket Hall of Fame, for ongoing significant contribution to the Cricket Match. Brad’s efforts, in addition to fundraising, included participation in half time activities, media promotion, assisting in the post event clean-up and, this year, for his efforts in the commentary box while recovering from injury.
Drew Morphett “Most Magnificent Moment”:
Damien Oliver’s One-Handed Catch clearly saw him win the “Most Magnificent Moment” in memory of Drew.
A massive thank you needs to go to the following players and commentators for their fundraising efforts.
All Stars: Danny O’Brien $13,541, (this takes Danny’s Grand total fundraising efforts for NJT Cricket to over $25k! Congratulations Danny and to your fantastic supporter base!).
Jockeys: Big thanks to Sun Stud, who donated $1000 per run for each of the 8 runs made by Brett Prebble, taking Brett’s fundraising for the event to a whopping $9,912.
Well done to WA’s superstar in William Pike who raised $4,184 in his first year playing.
And from the Commentary team, a very special recognition to the legendary Dr Gary Zimmerman ($4,553). It was just fantastic to have Gary on hand throughout the day and for what turned out to be an amazing fundraising effort!
This is the first year for this award and unfortunately for leading Ballarat trainer Matt Cumani, he walked away needing to clearly work on his cricket skills before next year.
